The Katherine Cove Series

In September 2016, I photographed the striking display of textures, lines and shapes of the rock platform at Katherine Cove, Lake Superior, Ontario. I had several 5 x 7 inch prints made to be used as reference material for textile works. However, I had the irresistible urge to stitch directly onto the photographs. Subsequently, a whole series developed in which cotton painted with acrylic, Colour Vie pigments or black ink, paper painted with black ink, fabric and birch bark were stitched and stones, beads, buttons or metal were affixed onto the photographic support. Sometimes the fabric or paper were ripped or cut off, revealing the underlying photograph or layer. The beauty of the Cove as well as the memory of the visit with my family distilled a sense of discovery and renewal.
